About VISACT
VISACT was formed on 1 July 2004.
VISACT, or Vision Impaired Sports ACT, is an athlete driven association created to fill a void in the playing field of blind sport in the ACT. VISACT, working with ACTSPORT and State Sporting Bodies, will provide people who are blind or vision impaired with a variety of sporting and recreational options.
VISACT is doing this on two fronts. The first is developing and creating opportunities for people to take part in sports developed specifically for people who are blind or vision impaired. Examples of these sports are goalball and swish.
The second front sees VISACT working with sporting bodies to ensure inclusion, access and equity for people who are blind or vision impaired in more traditional sports. Some sports in this category include golf, tenpin bowling, tennis, martial arts, swimming and athletics. New sports are being regularly added, check with VISACT or visit our site some time soon.
Blind Cricket is also being managed by VISACT, who are working closely with ACT Cricket and the Australian Blind Cricket Council.
VISACT is also influencing policy and the strategic focus of sports development for athletes who are blind or vision impaired. Working with ACTSPORT VIACT has made and will continue to represent the interests of ACT athletes to national sporting bodies.
VISACT adheres to eye sight classification systems that apply to all sports in Australia. To take part in sport you must fall into one of the specified categories. More details can be found here.
The VISACT management committee is made up of an executive board, which has four members. Reporting to the executive board are representatives from each of the active sports. The VISACT executive board meets once a month and the full committee meets four times per year.
