About VISACT
VISACT was formed on 1 July 2004 and incorporated in October 2008.
Vision Impaired Sports ACT (VISACT) was formed to meet a void in the sporting sector within the ACT as until then no single body existed to assist people who are blind or vision impaired with sport and recreation options in the ACT. As the ACT member of Blind Sports Australia, we work closely with the Australian Sports Commission, Sport & Recreation Services ACT, Canberra Blind Society, Guide Dogs Association ACT/NSW and Vision Australia to influence policy and the future promotion and dvelopment of blind sports in the ACT.
VISACT is doing this on two fronts. The first is developing and creating opportunities for people to take part in sports developed specifically for people who are blind or vision impaired. Examples of these sports are goalball and swish.
The second front sees VISACT working with sporting bodies to ensure inclusion, access and equity for people who are blind or vision impaired in more traditional sports. Some sports in this category include golf, tenpin bowling, tennis, martial arts, swimming and athletics. New sports are being regularly added, check with VISACT or visit our site some time soon.
Blind Cricket is also being managed by VISACT, who are working closely with Cricket ACT and the Australian Blind Cricket Australia.
VISACT adheres to eye sight classification systems that apply to all sports in Australia. To take part in sport you must fall into one of the specified categories. More details can be found here.
The VISACT management committee is made up of an executive board, which has four members. Reporting to the executive board are representatives from each of the active sports. The VISACT executive board meets once a month and the full committee meets four times per year.
